Zarkon went on unperturbed, though, as he wanted to use the Quintessence as a power source now that he was the Galra Emperor and the universe was trembling at his might. Zarkon went after the other Lions to kill the remaining Paladins, but Alfor hid the Lions away before he died so that his daughter and her friends would find the Lions later on in the series. They attacked the other Paladins and destroyed Althea as revenge for Alfor letting Daibazaal die, even though he had no choice if he wanted to save the rest of the galaxy.

Zarkon thought this was the key to immortality, but they became monsters when the emerged later on. This was all part of his plan to bathe himself and his wife in its healing energies. Zarkon wanted to cure Honerva and tricked Team Voltron into entering the Quintessence dimension.
